Cape Verde's ten islands are so different from each other that choosing the wrong one for your trip style is the single most common mistake first-time visitors make. 🌊 Sal — Where Most First Timers Start

Sal is the flattest and most developed of Cape Verde's islands — a semi-arid landscape of red volcanic rock and salt pans with two assets that compensate for its lack of drama: Santa Maria beach, a genuinely beautiful long arc of white sand and calm turquoise water, and Ponta Preta, consistently ranked among the world's top 10 windsurfing and kitesurfing spots. The trade winds that blow reliably from the northeast make Sal ideal for both water sports and keeping the heat at a pleasant rather than brutal level.

Santa Maria town has a genuinely pleasant pedestrianised centre — pastel-coloured Portuguese colonial buildings, fresh seafood restaurants, beach bars and a fish market where the catch is brought in each morning. It is not a large town, which is part of its charm. You can walk from one end to the other in 15 minutes.

🌋 Fogo — The Island With a Village Inside a Volcano

Fogo (which means "fire" in Portuguese) is an active stratovolcano rising 2,829m from the Atlantic — the highest peak in the archipelago and one of the most visually dramatic islands in the world. Inside the caldera (the vast crater of the volcano) sits Chã das Caldeiras — a small community of farmers who grow the grapes for Fogo's extraordinary volcanic wine and coffee, surrounded by hardened black lava fields from the 2014 eruption that destroyed much of the village and which the community rebuilt. The hike to the summit of Pico do Fogo takes 4–5 hours and rewards climbers with views across to the neighbouring islands and down into a landscape that looks genuinely extraterrestrial.

🎵 São Vicente — Cape Verde's Musical Soul

Mindelo on São Vicente is Cape Verde's most cosmopolitan city — a harbour town of colourful colonial buildings, outdoor cafés, art galleries and live music bars that stay open late in a way that the beach resort towns do not. This is the island where morna — Cape Verde's soul music, melancholic and beautiful, best described as the Portuguese-African equivalent of the blues — is most alive. Cesária Évora, who brought morna to world audiences and won a Grammy in 2004, was born here. Live music is not a tourist attraction on São Vicente — it is part of the daily texture of Mindelo life.

🐢 Boa Vista — Desert Dunes and Sea Turtles

Boa Vista is the flattest and most Saharan of the main islands — vast dunes of windblown sand from the African mainland, long empty beaches, and a quality of light and silence that feels genuinely different from any other Atlantic island. The beaches here are among the most beautiful in Cape Verde — Praia de Chaves and Santa Monica are genuinely extraordinary stretches of undeveloped coastline. Between June and October, loggerhead sea turtles nest on Boa Vista's beaches — one of the largest nesting populations in the world — and turtle-watching tours (with conservation guides, strictly no flash photography) are one of the most moving wildlife experiences available in the Atlantic.

🍽️ What to Eat in Cape Verde

• Cachupa — Cape Verde's national dish. A slow-cooked stew of corn, beans, cassava and whatever protein is available — fish, sausage, chicken. Every family has a different recipe. The version served for Sunday lunch with fried egg on top (cachupa frita) is one of the great simple pleasures of Cape Verdean food
• Grilled fresh fish — Wahoo (atum), grouper (garoupa) and moray eel (moreia) grilled over charcoal at any harbour restaurant. Cape Verde's waters are extraordinarily productive and the fish is exceptional
• Fogo wine — Wine grown in volcanic soil inside a volcano crater at high altitude. The Chã das Caldeiras cooperative produces red and white wines that have developed an international reputation entirely disproportionate to their tiny production volume
• Grogue — Cape Verdean sugarcane rum, distilled on Santo Antão. Rough, strong and genuinely interesting in the way artisanal spirits always are when you try them where they are made
• Pastel de atum — Tuna pastels (fried pastry parcels with tuna filling) sold from street counters for loose change. The Cape Verdean equivalent of a pastel de nata, eaten constantly
