When people say "I want to visit Africa" they usually mean one of two things: a safari in Kenya or Tanzania, or a trip to South Africa. Both are extraordinary. Both are also expensive — a Kenya safari costs £3,000–8,000+ per person, South Africa requires two weeks minimum to do properly.

Africa is the second largest continent in the world. It has 54 countries. The idea that it is only accessible through a £5,000 safari or a Cape Town wine tour is the most limiting and most common misunderstanding in travel. Here is what else is there.

🌍 Africa Is Not Just Safari

Cape Verde is a Portuguese-speaking archipelago with direct flights from London, beaches that rival the Maldives and a music culture that produced one of the most beautiful sounds in the world. Zanzibar has Stone Town, extraordinary Indian Ocean beaches and costs that feel Southeast Asian. Rwanda has mountain gorillas and a story of remarkable national recovery. Morocco's south is a completely different country from the tourist-heavy north.

🇨🇻 Cape Verde — Africa's Best Kept Beach Secret

We have a full Cape Verde guide. The essentials: ten islands off the coast of West Africa, 4–5 hour direct flights from the UK, beaches that rival the Maldives and Seychelles, a Portuguese-Creole culture built on centuries of Atlantic trade, and the extraordinary Morna music (fado's African cousin, UNESCO-listed) that floats out of every bar and restaurant in the evening. The island of Sal is the most developed and resort-focused. Santiago has the colonial capital Cidade Velha (UNESCO World Heritage). São Vicente has Mindelo — the cultural capital, nightlife, Morna and carnival. Daily budget: £45–90.

🇹🇿 Zanzibar — The Indian Ocean Island Nobody Counts as Africa

Zanzibar is a semi-autonomous archipelago off the coast of Tanzania — culturally a mixture of African, Arabic, Indian and Persian influences that produced Stone Town (UNESCO World Heritage) and one of the world's most distinctive curry and seafood cuisines. The north and east coast beaches are extraordinary — white sand, turquoise water, dhow fishing boats and beach bars that serve grilled fish and cold Kilimanjaro beer for £5. We have a full Zanzibar guide. Daily budget: £40–90.

🇷🇼 Rwanda — Gorillas, Recovery and the Greenest Country in Africa

Rwanda is one of the cleanest countries in Africa and the site of one of the most remarkable national recoveries in modern history. The mountain gorilla experience in Volcanoes National Park — a permit costs $1,500 per person but includes a once-in-a-lifetime hour with a gorilla family in their natural habitat — is widely considered the single most extraordinary wildlife experience in the world. Kigali is a clean, modern, safe capital city. Rwanda's genocide memorial is one of the most important and carefully maintained historical sites in the world. This is not a light destination — it is one of the most serious and rewarding.

🇸🇹 São Tomé and Príncipe — The Island Nobody Has Found Yet

São Tomé and Príncipe is a tiny island nation in the Gulf of Guinea, 300km off the west coast of Africa. It has extraordinary rainforest, Portuguese colonial architecture, some of the world's finest cacao plantations (São Tomé chocolate is internationally prized), pristine beaches with almost no development and a population so small that you will encounter the same people everywhere you go. Direct flights from Lisbon (5 hours) and Luanda. Daily budget: £55–100.

🇲🇦 Southern Morocco — The Other Morocco

Most visitors to Morocco spend their time in Marrakech, Fes and the Atlantic coast. Southern Morocco — the Draa Valley, Merzouga and the Erg Chebbi dunes, Ouarzazate (where Gladiator and Game of Thrones were filmed), the Todra Gorge and Dades Valley — is a completely different landscape. The Sahara dune experience at Merzouga (sunrise from the top of a 300m dune after a camel ride) is extraordinary and costs £30–60 including the camel ride and a desert camp night. Access from Marrakech: 10-hour bus (£8) or organised tour from £80 per day.

🏝️
Tanzania: Zanzibar + mainland (without full safari)

Fly to Dar es Salaam, spend 2 days in the city (excellent Indian Ocean seafood, vibrant markets), ferry to Zanzibar (2 hours, £3). 10–12 days total, far cheaper than a full safari package.

🦍
Rwanda: Kigali + gorillas + Congo Nile Trail

❓ Frequently Asked Questions

Cape Verde, Zanzibar, Morocco, Rwanda (outside the gorilla permit), Egypt and São Tomé are all accessible without a safari budget. Cape Verde has direct flights from the UK and daily budgets from £45–90. Zanzibar is £40–90/day. Southern Morocco including a Sahara desert camp night can be done for £35–70/day.

Yes — Cape Verde is one of Africa's most accessible and underrated destinations. Direct flights from multiple UK airports, beaches that rival the Maldives, a unique Creole-Portuguese culture and the UNESCO-listed Morna music. Daily budget £45–90. Best time: November to June.

Yes — Zanzibar is generally safe for tourists. Stone Town and the main beach areas (Nungwi, Kendwa, Paje) are well set up for international visitors. Standard precautions apply in Stone Town after dark. Modest dress away from beaches respects local Muslim customs.

June to October (dry season, reliable sunshine) and January to February (short dry season) are the best times. Avoid March to May (long rains) and November (short rains). The east coast is better July–September — calmer seas for snorkelling and diving.

A Rwanda gorilla permit costs $1,500 USD per person for a one-hour visit with a gorilla family in Volcanoes National Park. It is widely considered the world's most extraordinary wildlife experience. Book well in advance — permits are limited and sell out months ahead, especially July–September.

✅ Final Verdict

Cape Verde for the easiest first step — direct flights from the UK, immediate beach quality, genuine culture. Zanzibar for the combination of history and beach that nothing else in the Indian Ocean quite matches at that price. Rwanda for the gorillas, which are genuinely once-in-a-lifetime.
