🏛️ Petra — The Rose Red City

Petra is the ancient Nabataean city carved directly into rose-red sandstone cliffs — a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the New Seven Wonders of the World. The approach through the Siq — a kilometre-long natural canyon of towering sandstone walls — builds anticipation to almost unbearable levels before the Treasury suddenly appears in a gap in the rock. The Al-Khazneh (Treasury) is iconic — but Petra extends for 60 square kilometres beyond it. Budget minimum 2 full days. The Monastery (Ad Deir) requires an 800-step climb but delivers an even more dramatic monument than the Treasury. Petra by Night — three times weekly — is extraordinary.

🌵 Wadi Rum — The Mars of Earth

Wadi Rum is a UNESCO World Heritage desert of red-gold sandstone mountains, ancient petroglyphs, sweeping dunes and absolute silence under the most spectacular night sky imaginable. This is where The Martian, Dune and Star Wars were filmed — and the landscape lives up to its cinematic reputation. A 4WD Jeep tour through the desert with a Bedouin guide, overnight in a traditional camp under the stars and a zarb dinner — slow-cooked underground — is one of the great travel experiences in the Middle East. 💧 Dead Sea — Float Without Trying

The Dead Sea at 430 metres below sea level is the lowest point on earth. The water is so dense with minerals that floating is automatic and effortless — reading a newspaper in the water is a genuine and slightly absurd rite of passage. The mineral-rich black mud applied to the skin and washed off in the sea is said to be therapeutic. 🏙️ Amman — Underrated Capital

Amman is frequently used only as a transit point but deserves more — the Amman Citadel with its Temple of Hercules and extraordinary view over the city is outstanding. The Roman Theatre in the city centre is one of the best-preserved in the Middle East. The food scene in Rainbow Street and Abdoun is excellent. Budget 1–2 days in Amman.

Is the Jordan Pass Worth It in 2026?

The Jordan Pass is almost certainly worth buying if you are visiting Petra and staying 3+ nights in Jordan. It includes entry to 40+ attractions including Petra (normally JOD 50 per day — approximately $70) AND waives the single-entry visa fee (JOD 40 — approximately $56). 🍖 Mansaf — Jordan's National Dish

Lamb slow-cooked in a sauce of fermented dried yoghurt, served over rice and flatbread, garnished with toasted nuts. Rich, tangy and deeply satisfying. Traditionally eaten communally with the right hand. Found at every traditional Jordanian restaurant and absolutely worth ordering at least once. Costs JOD 5–10 at a local restaurant.

🥙 Falafel and Hummus — Breakfast of Champions

Jordan's best breakfasts are simple — crisp freshly-fried falafel, hummus made from scratch that morning, warm flatbread, tomatoes, cucumber, olive oil and za'atar. Eaten at a local bakery-café it costs JOD 1–2 for a full breakfast and is genuinely extraordinary. The hummus in Jordan is among the best in the world.

🍮 Knafeh — The Great Dessert

Warm shredded wheat pastry soaked in sugar syrup and filled with melted white cheese — sweet, salty, warm and extraordinary. The famous Habibah sweets shop on Rainbow Street in Amman has served it since 1951. A portion costs less than JOD 1. Eating it warm from the pan is one of the best food experiences in the Middle East.
