This is far and away the most common and expensive mistake. The two islands have completely opposite rainy seasons. Going in August? Phuket is in the middle of heavy monsoon rains — you can book Koh Samui instead and get perfect weather. Going in November? Koh Samui gets its worst storms — go to Phuket instead. Always check the weather for the specific island on the specific dates you are travelling before booking anything.
Patong Beach is Phuket's most famous beach and the worst place to stay if you are not specifically there for the nightlife. The beach is overcrowded, the restaurants are tourist traps and the noise at night is relentless. Kata Noi, Nai Harn and Kamala are far superior beach options that give you all the island's advantages without the party chaos. Phuket is not just Patong — choosing where to stay makes an enormous difference to your experience.
Koh Samui Airport is privately operated by Bangkok Airways — the only airline allowed to operate there at no competition, meaning flights from Bangkok to Samui cost significantly more than other domestic Thai routes.
