Thailand or Vietnam. It is one of the most common travel debates in Southeast Asia — and one of the most genuinely difficult to answer because both countries are extraordinary in completely different ways. Thailand is the one everyone has heard of — Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Koh Samui, the Full Moon Party. Vietnam is the one everyone comes back raving about — Hội An at night, Hạ Long Bay at dawn, the food at every corner, the motorbikes, the history.
The right answer depends entirely on what kind of traveller you are, how much time you have and what you want most from Southeast Asia. This guide gives you the honest category-by-category breakdown so you can stop going back and forth and actually book the trip.

Beaches — Thailand vs Vietnam
🇹🇭 Thailand's Beaches
Thailand has an extraordinary collection of tropical islands spread across both the Gulf of Thailand and Andaman Sea. Krabi and the Phi Phi Islands deliver postcard-perfect limestone cliffs and turquoise water. Koh Lanta offers long empty beaches away from the crowds. Koh Phangan hosts the Full Moon Party — 15,000 people on a beach under a full moon. Island hopping is easy, affordable and well-organised.
🇻🇳 Vietnam's Beaches
Vietnam has a 3,444km coastline and some genuinely beautiful beaches — Danang, Phú Quốc island and Mũi Né are all beautiful. But the island infrastructure is less developed than Thailand and the beaches themselves are generally less impressive for swimming and snorkelling. You do not come to Vietnam primarily for the beaches.
Food — Thailand vs Vietnam
🇹🇭 Thailand's Food
Thai food is one of the world's greatest culinary traditions — pad Thai, green curry, som tum (papaya salad), mango sticky rice, massaman curry. Bangkok's street food scene is world-famous — Or Tor Kor market, Chinatown's Yaowarat Road and the night markets of Chiang Mai are among the finest food experiences in Asia. Complex flavour profiles — sweet, sour, salty, spicy simultaneously — that are deeply satisfying.
🇻🇳 Vietnam's Food
Vietnam's food is extraordinary in a completely different way — lighter, fresher and more regionally varied than Thailand. Phở (beef noodle soup) from a street stall at 6am costs $1 and is one of the world's great breakfasts. Bún bò Huế, bánh mì, gỏi cuốn (fresh spring rolls), bún chả, cao lầu in Hội An — every region has its own dishes that do not exist elsewhere in the country. The freshness of Vietnamese food — herbs, rice paper, fresh vegetables at every meal — makes it feel simultaneously satisfying and light. Vietnam may have the best food of any country in Southeast Asia.
Culture & History — Thailand vs Vietnam
🇻🇳 Vietnam Wins on Culture
Vietnam's history is one of the most dramatic and moving of any country on earth — thousands of years of occupation and resistance, a devastating 20th century war that reshaped the world, and a culture that emerged from it with extraordinary resilience and warmth. Hội An's Ancient Town — lantern-lit streets of preserved merchant houses and temples — is one of the most beautiful and atmospheric places in Asia. Hạ Long Bay — 1,500 limestone islands rising from emerald water — is one of the world's great landscapes. The War Museum in Ho Chi Minh City is one of the most powerful and important museums in Southeast Asia.
🇹🇭 Thailand's Culture
Thailand's Buddhist temple culture is genuinely extraordinary — Wat Phra Kaew and Wat Arun in Bangkok, the ancient ruins of Ayutthaya, the temples of Chiang Mai and the monks' alms-giving ceremony at dawn. Thailand's culture is accessible and well-presented for visitors. But it has been experienced by so many tourists that it can feel more packaged than Vietnam's.
Nightlife — Thailand vs Vietnam
Ease of Travel — Thailand vs Vietnam
🇹🇭 Thailand — More Tourist-Ready
Thailand has been developing its tourist infrastructure for longer and it shows. English is widely spoken everywhere tourists go. Transport between major destinations is straightforward. Grab works in every major city. Tourist-facing services are polished and well-organised. The learning curve for navigating Thailand is relatively gentle.
🇻🇳 Vietnam — More Chaotic but More Rewarding
Vietnam is more challenging to navigate — motorbike traffic is intense, English is less universal outside tourist areas and transport between regions requires more planning. But this friction is precisely what makes Vietnam feel more like genuine travel and less like a tourist production. The chaos is part of the experience. The reward for engaging with it properly is a richer and more memorable trip.

🌐🚫 Mistakes When Choosing Between Thailand and Vietnam
Thailand and Vietnam are each individually a 2-week destination minimum if you want to see more than the highlights. Trying to combine both countries in a single 2-week trip means spending several of those days on flights and transit, arriving exhausted in each new city and properly experiencing neither country. Pick one country, explore it properly and come back for the other. The one exception is a Thailand islands + Vietnam south combination which is logistically feasible if you fly between Bangkok and Ho Chi Minh City.
Bangkok is extraordinary but many first time Thailand visitors spend their entire trip between Bangkok and the southern islands without visiting Chiang Mai and northern Thailand. Chiang Mai is consistently voted one of the best cities in Southeast Asia — stunning temples, the best Thai food in the country, night markets, cooking classes, trekking, elephant sanctuaries and a completely different atmosphere from Bangkok. Always include at least 3 nights in Chiang Mai on a Thailand trip.
Some Vietnam itineraries skip Hội An because it adds a flight or bus between Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City. This is the single most common Vietnam regret. Hội An — the UNESCO-listed Ancient Town of preserved merchant houses, tailor shops, lantern-lit streets and extraordinary food — is the most beautiful town in Vietnam and one of the most beautiful in Southeast Asia. Build your Vietnam itinerary around Hội An, not around what is convenient to skip.
Bangkok taxi scams are legendary — meters that run too fast, refusing to use the meter at all, taking long routes and the famous gem shop scam where the driver suggests a detour to a friend's jewellery shop. Use Grab exclusively in Bangkok — it shows the driver's details, the route and fixes the price before you get in. Every experienced Bangkok traveller uses Grab. The app costs the same or less than a legitimate taxi and eliminates every scam completely.
In both Thailand and Vietnam the street food is not just the cheapest option — it is genuinely the best food in the country. The restaurants that charge 10 times the price of a street stall rarely serve better food. A bowl of phở from a street stall at dawn in Hanoi that has been making the same recipe for 30 years will be better than almost anything in a tourist restaurant. Eat where the locals eat, not where the English menus are.
Day trip cruises to Hạ Long Bay from Hanoi involve 3.5 hours each way in a minibus for about 2 hours on the water. The experience is underwhelming and rushed. Hạ Long Bay is extraordinary when you spend the night on a junk boat in the bay — waking at dawn to mist rising between the limestone islands in complete silence is one of the great experiences in Southeast Asia. Always book a minimum 2-day 1-night cruise. The cost difference is modest and the experience difference is enormous.
