Why Visit Turkey in 2026?

Turkey offers an incredible combination of history, food, landscapes and value that is genuinely hard to beat anywhere in the world. Istanbul is one of the greatest cities on earth — the only city that straddles two continents. Cappadocia's otherworldly rock formations and hot air balloon rides are truly bucket-list worthy. The Aegean and Mediterranean coasts offer some of Europe's most beautiful beaches and turquoise water. And all of this at prices that are among the best value in the region.

Top Destinations in Turkey

Istanbul — Turkey's extraordinary metropolis of 15 million people spanning two continents. Don't miss the Hagia Sophia, Blue Mosque, Topkapi Palace, Grand Bazaar and the Bosphorus. Allow at least 3–4 days.

Cappadocia — The most surreal landscape in Turkey — ancient volcanic rock formations, underground cities and thousands of cave hotels. The hot air balloon sunrise experience over Göreme valley is one of the most magical things you can do anywhere in the world. Budget $150–$250 for a balloon flight.

Pamukkale — The famous white calcium terraces and turquoise thermal pools. Combine with a visit to the ancient Roman city of Hierapolis. Easily visited as a day trip from Antalya or Izmir.

Ephesus — One of the best-preserved ancient Roman cities in the world. The Library of Celsus is breathtaking. Near the coastal town of Selçuk.

The Turquoise Coast (Ölüdeniz, Bodrum, Antalya) — Turkey's stunning Mediterranean and Aegean coastline with beautiful beaches, clear water and excellent resorts at very good prices.

Visa Requirements for Turkey

Many nationalities can visit Turkey visa-free or with an easy e-Visa. Here's a quick guide:

NationalityVisa RequirementDuration
🇬🇧 UKe-Visa required ($32)90 days
🇺🇸 USAe-Visa required ($32)90 days
🇪🇺 EU (most)Visa free90 days
🇦🇺 Australiae-Visa required ($32)90 days

🇦🇪 UAEVisa free30 days

The Turkey e-Visa is quick and easy to apply for online at evisa.gov.tr — takes about 5 minutes and is approved almost instantly for most nationalities.

Essential Turkey Travel Tips

Currency — Turkey uses the Turkish Lira (TRY). Always pay in Lira not USD or Euros — vendors sometimes offer to charge in foreign currency at very unfavourable rates. ATMs are everywhere and give excellent rates.

Dress code — Turkey is a largely secular country and dress is relaxed in tourist areas and cities. However when visiting mosques both men and women should cover shoulders and knees, and women should cover their hair. Scarves are usually available at mosque entrances.

Food — Turkish food is world-class and very affordable. Don't miss iskender kebab, meze spreads, fresh baklava, simit (sesame bread rings), Turkish breakfast (kahvaltı) and of course Turkish tea and coffee.

Haggling — Expected at the Grand Bazaar in Istanbul and in markets. Start at about 40–50% of the asking price and work up. It's all good-natured fun!

💡 Istanbul Tip: Get an Istanbulkart (transit card) on arrival — it works on all metro, tram, bus and ferry lines and saves you significant money compared to buying single tickets. Available at all metro stations for around $2.

🚫 Common Mistakes Tourists Make (And How to Avoid Them)

⚠️
Skipping the e-Visa

Many nationalities need a Turkey e-Visa and must get it BEFORE arrival. Arriving without one can mean being turned away at immigration.

⚠️
Paying tourist prices without negotiating

In bazaars and markets negotiating is expected. Never pay the first price — always start at 40–50% and work up. It's friendly and expected.

⚠️
Underestimating Cappadocia balloon demand

Hot air balloon flights in Cappadocia sell out months in advance in peak season. Book as soon as your trip is confirmed.

⚠️
Ignoring the Turkish breakfast

A full Turkish kahvaltı breakfast is one of the great pleasures of Turkish travel. Never skip it — it's often included at guesthouses and absolutely extraordinary.
