Zanzibar is the kind of place that people who have been there talk about differently from other destinations. Not with the enthusiasm of a checked box, but with the quieter tone of somewhere they are already planning to return to. The white sand at Nungwi. The blue-green water at Kendwa. The labyrinth of Stone Town's streets at dusk, smelling of spices and charcoal grills. The fact that, despite the dhows and the Indian Ocean and the coral reefs, it somehow still does not feel overrun in the way that its beauty probably should have guaranteed by now.

This is a genuinely honest first-timer guide — what Zanzibar actually offers, what it costs at different budgets, which areas are worth your time and what first-time visitors consistently wish they had known before they arrived.

🏝️ Zanzibar in One Honest Paragraph

Zanzibar is a Tanzanian semi-autonomous island 35km off the East African coast — Stone Town (UNESCO World Heritage Site), spice farms, some of the best snorkelling in the Indian Ocean, and beaches that genuinely compete with the Maldives at a fraction of the price. It works as a standalone trip or as an extension to a Tanzania or Kenya safari.

🏰 Stone Town — Why You Need More Than One Day

Stone Town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most atmospheric old towns in East Africa — a dense medieval-style labyrinth of narrow streets, carved wooden doors, coral stone buildings, mosques, Indian merchant houses and Omani palaces that accumulated over five centuries of Arab, Persian, Indian and Portuguese trading influence. Most visitors treat it as a one-afternoon stop before heading to the beaches. Most visitors are wrong.

Give Stone Town two full days. The House of Wonders (the tallest building in East Africa when it was built in 1883). The Arab Fort. The slave market memorial, which provides essential historical context — Zanzibar was the largest slave trading hub in East Africa. The Forodhani Gardens night food market for Zanzibar pizza, grilled seafood and fresh sugarcane juice at sunset.

🏖️ Which Beach Area — The Honest Breakdown

Nungwi — Best Beach, Most Developed

Nungwi is at the northern tip of the island — a wide bay of white sand and calm turquoise water that does not have the tidal problem that affects beaches on the east coast (where the sea recedes 400+ metres at low tide, leaving exposed coral and no swimming for hours). Nungwi has the best swimming of any beach on Zanzibar. It is also the most developed, with the highest concentration of restaurants, bars and resorts. For first-timers who want guaranteed swimming and a lively beach scene, Nungwi is the right choice.

Kendwa — Same Beach, Quieter

Kendwa is 15 minutes south of Nungwi by boat or road — the same quality of beach, same calm water, significantly fewer people and a slower pace. Known for its full moon parties (monthly) and a more relaxed, less commercial vibe. If Nungwi feels too busy, Kendwa is your answer.

Paje — For Kitesurfing and Backpackers

Paje is on the east coast — affected by tides (swimming at low tide is impossible) but one of the world's top kitesurfing destinations when the trade winds blow. Cheaper than Nungwi, popular with longer-stay travellers and kitesurfers, with a good backpacker infrastructure.

Matemwe — Luxury and Quiet

Matemwe is the east coast alternative for those who want quiet — a string of upscale boutique properties on a long undeveloped stretch of beach. Snorkelling access to Mnemba Atoll (one of the top dive sites in East Africa) is easiest from here. Tidal limitations apply but the quiet and the access to world-class snorkelling compensate.

🐠 Mnemba Atoll — The Snorkelling That Changes Things

Mnemba Atoll is a protected marine reserve off the northeast coast — one of the best snorkelling and diving sites in the western Indian Ocean. Green sea turtles, hawksbill turtles, dolphins, hundreds of reef fish species and occasional whale sharks in season. Snorkel tours run from Stone Town and from Matemwe ($40–80 per person including gear and boat). This is genuinely world-class marine life and should be on every Zanzibar itinerary.

🌿 Spice Farm Tour — Worth Doing or Tourist Trap?

Zanzibar has been producing cloves, nutmeg, cinnamon, vanilla and black pepper for centuries — it was once the world's largest clove producer. Spice farm tours run from Stone Town ($20–40 per person, 3–4 hours including lunch) and involve walking through working farms while guides identify, explain and let you taste and smell the raw spices in their natural state. Whether it is "worth it" depends on your interest in food and agriculture. If you care about where spices come from and how they grow — genuinely one of the most educational 4 hours you can spend anywhere. If you find botany tours dull, skip it.

🚫 Zanzibar Mistakes First Timers Make

⚠️
Choosing an east coast beach without understanding the tides

Several popular Zanzibar beaches — particularly Paje, Bwejuu and parts of Jambiani — have severe tidal movement. At low tide the sea recedes hundreds of metres, leaving exposed reef and making swimming impossible for 3–4 hours twice daily. If guaranteed swimming is your priority, book on the north coast (Nungwi or Kendwa) where this issue does not occur.

⚠️
Only spending one afternoon in Stone Town

Stone Town is one of the most remarkable preserved old cities in Africa. Rushing through it in an afternoon, ticking the fort and the market, misses almost everything that makes it extraordinary. Two full days — including getting genuinely lost in the lanes, eating at the Forodhani night market and visiting the slave memorial with proper time — transforms the whole Zanzibar experience.

⚠️
Skipping the Mnemba Atoll to save money

The Mnemba Atoll snorkel tour at $40–80 per person is the single best activity on Zanzibar. Choosing cheaper beach snorkelling (often in degraded reef areas near resorts) to save $30–50 is one of the most consistently regretted Zanzibar decisions. Book Mnemba. The turtles and dolphins are not a given anywhere else in East Africa at that price.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions

Yes — Zanzibar offers a combination of Stone Town's historic atmosphere, world-class snorkelling at Mnemba Atoll, genuinely beautiful beaches and East African culture at significantly lower prices than the Maldives or Seychelles for comparable sea quality. It works as a standalone trip or combined with a Kenya or Tanzania safari.

Nungwi on the north coast for most first-timers — wide bay, calm turquoise water, no tidal issues (you can swim all day), good restaurant and bar scene. Kendwa (15 min south of Nungwi) is equally beautiful and quieter. East coast beaches like Paje are great for kitesurfing but suffer from tidal receding — swimming is impossible at low tide.

Minimum 5 days, ideally 7. Two days in Stone Town covers the history and culture properly. One day for a Mnemba Atoll snorkel tour. Three or four days for beach time in Nungwi or Kendwa. Rushing Zanzibar into 3 days means missing most of what makes it extraordinary.

June–October (dry season, cooler, calmest seas — ideal for snorkelling and diving) and December–February (warm, minimal rain, calm Indian Ocean). Avoid March–May (long rains, rough seas, many resorts close). The dry season is genuinely more comfortable and the best visibility for Mnemba Atoll.

Zanzibar is part of Tanzania so you need a Tanzania e-Visa ($50 USD), applied for online at eservices.immigration.go.tz before travel. Most nationalities including UK, US, Canada and Australia are eligible. The visa covers both mainland Tanzania and Zanzibar.

By air to Zanzibar International Airport (ZNZ): direct from Nairobi (1 hour), Addis Ababa (2.5 hours), Doha (5.5 hours), Dubai (6 hours). From Europe, typical connections are via Nairobi (Kenya Airways), Addis Ababa (Ethiopian Airlines) or Doha (Qatar Airways). Total journey time from UK is typically 10–13 hours.

✅ Final Verdict

Zanzibar earns its reputation quietly — it does not announce itself the way more famous islands do. Stone Town is genuinely one of the most atmospheric old cities in Africa. Mnemba Atoll is genuinely world-class snorkelling. Nungwi is genuinely as beautiful as the photographs suggest. And it costs a fraction of what the Maldives would charge for comparable Indian Ocean quality. Go for seven days minimum. Spend two of them in Stone Town. Book the Mnemba snorkel early.
