The Maldives is structurally designed for couples. Resorts are on private islands — often with fewer than 30 villas — and the activities, dining and atmosphere are entirely oriented around romance and relaxation. Solo travellers consistently report feeling isolated and slightly out of place. Group friends expecting a social holiday will be disappointed by the lack of bars, restaurants outside the resort and any kind of nightlife. For these travel styles, Dubai is the vastly better choice.
The seaplane transfer from Malé airport to your resort is not included in most hotel rates and costs $300–$600 per person return. This is the single most commonly missed expense in Maldives trip planning. It is also non-negotiable for most resorts — there is no road and often no speedboat alternative.
